STAFF BIOGRAPHIES

For nearly two decades, Summer Study Programs has been the leader in pre-college programs for high school students. Our full time staff works all year to ensure the ongoing quality of our programs. Our administrators take great pride in the superiority of our programs and bring many years of experience to the organization.


Bill Cooperman, BS, MS
Executive Director
With more than thirty-five years of experience in domestic and international student travel programs, Bill provides leadership and longevity to Summer Study. Bill has made it his mission to provide students with the most rewarding, most meaningful, most fun and most memorable summer imaginable. He has created the ULTIMATE pre-collegiate experience.

Mike Sirowitz, BA
Director of Programs and Operations
Ever since his first summer as a camp counselor (30+ years ago), Mike has dedicated his life to working with teenagers. His tremendous organizational skills, commitment to excellence and passion for what he does are the cornerstone of Summer Study programming. Mike still spends every summer at Penn State making sure that all “his kids” have the greatest summer of their lives.

David Wolk, BS ATC
Director of Personnel & Staffing
A graduate of Penn State University, David loves to see high school students thrive in the Summer Study environment. With the knowledge and experience gained after many years as a certified athletic trainer and program director, David is a great leader and master at facilitating exciting educational activities. David takes pride in filling Summer Study’s staff positions throughout the winter and spring.

Diane Strumlauf, BA
Director of Health Services
With us from the very beginning, Diane has played a vital part in ensuring the health and well-being of more than 15,000 students. In addition to her role as Director of Health Services, over the past 19 years, Diane has done “just about everything” to support the endless needs – both technical and emotional -- of our Summer Study office.

Jason Thaw, BA
Director of Student Enrollment
A student athlete during his college years Jason, spent most of his time traveling to tournaments throughout New England and missed out on the true “college experience.” Now with his position at Summer Study Programs, he enjoys living vicariously through the students, and is known to get in on the fun himself. His charming personality, and the care that he has for the students in the programs is apparent from the very first time you meet him. His ability to help students balance the demands of school, and the need to enjoy life, ensures that all of the students will get the most out of their summer study experience.

Jack Kelley, BA
Director of Student Activities
A Penn State Alum with a love for the outdoors, Jack strives to help students find their own unique summer experience. His witty humor and outgoing personality help ensure that students’ days are filled with smiles and laughter. Drawing upon his years as a certified high school Biology teacher with a passion for athletics, Jack helps students understand the importance of balancing their classes, activities and social lives, to ensure that they have the summer of a lifetime. Jack's goal is for the lessons his students learn during their Summer Study program to help them through the transition into college.

Deborah Draper, BA, MA, H.Dip.Ed.
Director of International Programs
Having spent many years working & studying in Paris, Deborah loves nothing better than spending her summers back in this amazing city. Deborah has many years experience working with teenagers, as throughout the academic year she works as a French teacher in Ireland. Deborah finds working with young people incredibly rewarding, this is why she spends her summers as part of the Summer Study team. Deborah takes pride in running our Paris program and ensuring that every student has an unforgettable experience.

Julian Fowler, BS
Assistant Director of International Programs
As a former professional tour guide, Jullien has many years of experience working with adolescent groups and the wonderful ability to organize and lead exciting educational adventures. Jullien likes nothing more than accompanying students while they live in and learn about a new culture.

Tom Cook, BS, MS
Program Coordinator
After graduating from Penn State, Tom starting teaching high school just outside Philadelphia. His love for the students is evident in his teaching style and his involvement in many extra-curricular activities. Tom is an internationally recognized Ultimate Frisbee coach and has coached in multiple world championships. He is deeply involved with the students during the summer and is seldom seen without a smile.
