Doing Anthropology: Discover the world of anthropology first-hand. Explore how anthropologists examine and explain the human realm. How is accurate information obtained and how can it be accessed? Emphasis is placed on original research and reporting including written reports, brochures, posters, photo essays, film, and other mediums of communication.
Human Cultures: Introduction to cultural anthropology focusing on the life ways of non-Western societies and how anthropologists study them.

Comics-Drawing a Narrative: Making Comics is a practical course exploring the possibilities of various types of comics from single-panel to strip to several-page story. In-class exercises will focus on the building blocks of comics: layout, composition, drawing, narrative, inking, and lettering skills. The course also includes instruction in perspective and figure drawing. For the final project students will create their own comic strip, graphic novella, or series of narrative illustrations, from thumbnail sketches through scanning and reproduction. Discussion and analysis of past and current comic genres and artists, and on-going critiques of student work, will provide insight and inspiration.

Mafia & Capitalism-Russian Style: This course will seek to elucidate the tortuous path of “capitalism” in post-Soviet Russia with special attention devoted to the following topics: the rise of mafia, the privatization of Soviet industry, the emergence of the banking “oligarchs,” the 1995 “loan for shares” scheme, the 1998 collapse of the Russian economy, President Vladimir Putin’s apparent moves in the direction of “state capitalism,” the Khodorovsky/Yukos affair, Oil and Gas in Russia in the 21st century.

History
US History: Survey from the pre-Revolutionary period to 1876. This introductory course focuses on America from the era of European and African settlement to the era of Reconstruction. Combining lectures, reading and extensive discussion, the course will present history as an organic process characterized by the dynamics of continuity and change over time. Above all else, emphasis will be placed on the long and complex process that culminated in Southern secession and the Civil War that followed.
Modern Chinese History & Society: This course offers an introduction to the history, economy and culture of Chinese society from the Qing dynasty to the present, with particular emphasis on the 20th century. Students will gain an understanding of key ancient philosophical traditions in China and their legacies, as well as an appreciation for the impact of more recent ideologies such as nationalism and socialism in China today. Along with class lectures our exploration will include discussion of Chinese fiction, film, and autobiography, as well as contemporary works of social commentary analyzing the dynamics and consequences of China's recent spectacular economic growth.

Applications of Finite Math: Introduction to mathematics of finite systems with applications, such as probability, statistics, growth and symmetry, graph theory, fair division, apportionment problems, and voting systems. Prerequisite Two years of secondary school algebra.
Pre-Calculus: Skills in working with numerical, algebraic, and trigonometric expressions are developed in preparation for college Calculus. Prerequisites: Two years of secondary school algebra, one of secondary school geometry.

YOU CAN COUNT ON ME: ALEGBRA I, II -- A firm understanding of algebra is necessary in order to continue on to more advanced levels of math. This class will improve your understanding of the basic concepts of high school algebra using familiar drills and exercises. Includes a review of basic geometric principles, also fundamental in math. This class is especially helpful in preparation for the math section of the SAT exam. Students must have completed two years of high school math to enroll in this class.

YOU’RE FIRED!: BUSINESS, MARKETINGAND ADVERTISING -- Stop sitting around thinking about how you could easily be the next “Apprentice" and start taking some action! Begin to understand the interaction between buyer and seller, the role of the consumer, and successful ways to act and react in professional situations. The class is designed to be a hands-on lesson in developing a business plan in today's economy, including marketing and advertising strategies and campaigns. Take a deep look into print ads, internet ads, radio spots, commercials, public service announcements and movie trailers, and see how they change the opinions of the public. All this will prepare you for hearing those two amazing words: "You're hired!"

VOLUNTEER TO VOLUNTEER: COMMUNITY SERVICE -- Get out of the classroom and involved in the community! Join your instructor and classmates in extended projects on and around campus that are beneficial to the community and enriching for you. This "feel good" class will prepare a variety of activities targeting some social concerns in the area. Give something back to those who are less fortunate. In class, you'll discuss the effectiveness of each project, and how you have made a difference even after the summer ends. Volunteers will receive a certificate of accomplishment. High school credit is available.

BECOME ONE WITH NATURE: ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE -- This course serves as an introduction to and covers broad aspects of environmental science and environmental studies. Negative environmental impacts are studied in detail. Specifically, this course examines the risks associated with growth in a developing world, the environmental impact of population growth on natural resources, air and water pollution, mineral and resource extraction, water resource uses, and renewable and non-renewable sources for power generation. Emphasis is placed on a holistic approach to environmental science using known test results, environmental surveys, and class discussions to reinforce scientific principles.

This workshop will help you focus on improving your mind and your body by examining your health holistically. On your journey you’ll examine the relationship between your mental and physical states, and find the balance that will bring you to your ideal health. This workshop will teach you to enhance your overall wellness using yoga, aromatherapy, stress, nutrition and physical fitness. Awareness is channeled through discussions and out of class activities.
